La Repubblica del Vietnam nasce nel 1955. In seguito alla sconfitta delle truppe francesi nella battaglia di Diên Biên Phu, nel luglio 1954 vengono firmati gli Accordi di Ginevra, che ratificano la divisione provvisoria del Vietnam indipendente tra la Repubblica socialista del Vietnam. Nam comunista a nord del 17° parallelo e Repubblica filo-occidentale del Vietnam a sud. Di fronte all'insurrezione della guerriglia comunista e all'instabilità politica del regime, il governo di Saigon fece appello al sostegno militare degli Stati Uniti, un aiuto militare che avrebbe portato alla guerra del Vietnam. Gli accordi di Parigi del 1973 portano al disimpegno americano. L'esercito sudvietnamita non riesce ad arginare le avances militari nordvietnamite sostenute da URSS e Cina. Saigon cadde il 30 aprile 1975. Il Vietnam fu ufficialmente riunificato il 2 luglio 1976..
