(1536-1798)
Ginevra ha vissuto gravi disordini sociali alla vigilia della Rivoluzione francese. Nel 1790 gli abitanti, privati dei diritti politici, si ribellarono e finirono per prendere il potere: proclamarono l'uguaglianza di tutti i cittadini nel dicembre 1792. Il 23 Germinal anno VI (12 aprile 1798) fu fondata la Repubblica Elvetica e il 26 Germinal (15 aprile 1798), i francesi occuparono Ginevra, che fu annessa il successivo 7 Floréal (26 aprile 1798) e divenne la capitale del dipartimento del Léman..
