Antioco IV era il figlio più giovane di Antioco III. Era stato inviato a Roma come ostaggio dopo la pace di Apamea. Combatté gli egiziani, devastò il Tempio di Gerusalemme e vinse diverse vittorie su Tolomeo VI Filometore (180-145 a.C.).
