Charles III, dit le Simple, né le 17 septembre 879, mort le 7 octobre 929 à Péronne[3], dans la Somme, est roi de Francie occidentale de la fin du IXe siècle et du début du Xe siècle, appartenant à la dynastie carolingienne.
Ce fils posthume et légitime du roi de Francie Louis II le Bègue († le 10 avril 879) et de sa seconde épouse Adélaïde n'est qu'un prince héritier de cinq ans après la disparition des ses frères issus du premier lit royal, Louis III mort en 882 et Carloman II en 884. Il est ainsi facilement écarté du trône par les grands de Francie occidentale. Sa jeunesse ne convient pas aux impératifs de défense en cette période troublée, sous la triple menace nordique, sarrazine et magyare. Le jeune Charles est placé en 885 sous la tutelle de l'empereur Charles III le Gros. Après la destitution et l'abdication de ce dernier, le robertien Eudes, vaillant défenseur face aux Normands de Paris assiégé durant l'hiver 885-886, se fait élire roi en février 888.

Charles III, known as the Simple, born on 17 September 879 and died on 7 October 929 in Péronne[3], in the Somme, was king of West Francia at the end of the 9th century and the beginning of the 10th century, belonging to the Carolingian dynasty. This posthumous and legitimate son of the King of Francia Louis II the Stammerer († on 10 April 879) and his second wife Adelaide was only a crown prince of five years after the death of his brothers from the first royal bed, Louis III who died in 882 and Carloman II in 884. He was thus easily removed from the throne by the grandees of West Francia. His youth was not suited to the imperatives of defense in this troubled period, under the triple Nordic, Saracen and Magyar threat. The young Charles was placed in 885 under the tutelage of Emperor Charles III the Fat. After the latter's dismissal and abdication, the Robertian Eudes, a valiant defender of Paris against the Normans under siege during the winter of 885-886, was elected king in February 888. Questa serie è stata incisa da Thomas Bernard ed è interrotta, per questo autore, dal segno di Luigi XIV. I seguenti gettoni sono incisi da Nicolas Gatteaux per Luigi XV, Duvivier per Luigi XVI, Puymaurin e Gayrard per Luigi XVII, Puymaurin e Depaulis per Luigi XVIII. La serie è spesso attribuita a Jean Dassier sulla fede di Forrer ma corregge la sua affermazione nel suo volume VIII e conferma gli archivi della Monnaie de Paris che specificano che la serie è stata commissionata da Monsieur de Launay. Esistono diverse emissioni, in rame o ottone, di peso variabile ma coerenti per serie, le matrici di rovescio a volte sono varie. La classificazione dei re avviene secondo l'uso antico, in tre razze successive. Notiamo l'esistenza di un token molto raro che spiega le sigle che abbiamo visto solo in una serie in ottone. La confezione di questa serie era in un tubo di legno. Ovviamente è molto difficile ricostruirlo e va notato che i diversi gettoni hanno rarità molto diverse, essendo stati probabilmente acquistati a pezzi dal pubblico, favorendo i buoni re. Esiste almeno una serie in argento, forse apocrifa, completata fino a Napoleone III con gettoni per tutti i regimi successivi, compresa la Rivoluzione e Napoleone I, vedi MONNAIES 28, n° 1395.
