On the obverse of the 5 Euro coin, there are reproductions of the portraits of Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin and American astronaut Alan Shepard as well as their two spacecraft, Vostok 1 and Freedom 7. Yuri Gagarin, in April 1961, was the first man to travel into space, followed a few weeks later, in May, by the American, Alan Shepard.

(XIII secolo - oggi)
La piccola repubblica di San Marino, a sud di Rimini, è libera dal XIII secolo. Nel XV secolo si dota di un Gran Consiglio di sessanta membri reclutati tra la nobiltà e la borghesia. Nell'Ottocento fu baluardo di rivoluzionari e dal 1862 si pose sotto la protezione del nuovo regno d'Italia, che ne rispettava l'indipendenza. I membri del Gran Consiglio sono eletti per quattro anni a suffragio universale (introdotto nel 1909); due di loro esercitano il potere esecutivo come capitani-reggenti per sei mesi.
