Médaille décernée sur la tranche au colonel Gaultier.
Il s’agit ici du général Louis-Antoine Gaultier (1898-1970) commençant l’armée par une mobilisation en 1917, affecté au 4e régiment de zouaves où il sera successivement caporal, sergent, puis aspirant. Il sera nommé sous-lieutenant en 1919 au 1er Régiment étranger (Légion étrangère) où il fera quasiment toute sa carrière. En 1945, il sera promu au grade de colonel au 21e Régiment d'Infanterie avant de quitter la Légion en 1950 et d’être nommé adjoint au général.

This is General Louis-Antoine Gaultier (1898-1970) who began his military service with a mobilization in 1917, and was assigned to the 4th Zouave Regiment, where he was successively corporal, sergeant, and then cadet. He was appointed second lieutenant in 1919 in the 1st Foreign Regiment (Foreign Legion), where he spent almost his entire career. In 1945, he was promoted to the rank of colonel in the 21st Infantry Regiment before leaving the Legion in 1950 and being appointed deputy to the general.

QUARTA REPUBBLICA FRANCESE

Caratterizzata da un regime parlamentare unito a una grande instabilità ministeriale, la Quarta Repubblica ha la particolarità di non essere mai stata proclamata ufficialmente. Infatti, De Gaulle, quando arrivò a Parigi il 25 agosto 1944, si rifiutò di farlo con il pretesto che la Repubblica non aveva mai cessato di esistere. Considerando che lo Stato francese del maresciallo Pétain era solo un semplice stato di cose, ritiene che la Repubblica sia sopravvissuta nella Francia libera e il suo atto di nascita debba quindi essere il 18 giugno 1940. Tuttavia, la sua partenza, il 20 gennaio 1946, e il referendum del 13 ottobre 1946 che approva una nuova Costituzione, segna l'inizio ufficiale di questa repubblica. Conosce due presidenti: Vincent Auriol (16/01/1947 - 23/12/1953) e René Coty (23/12/1953 - 8/1/1959). La crisi aperta causata dalla rivolta dell'esercito algerino porta, nel 1958, alla sua caduta che viene confermata dall'adozione di una nuova costituzione il 28 settembre 1958. Tuttavia, essa non cessa definitivamente fino all'8 gennaio 1959 quando il generale de Gaulle è stato insediato come presidente della Quinta Repubblica.
