PAYS-BAS ESPAGNOLS - PHILIPPE II D'ESPAGNE
(25/10/1555-13/09/1598)
Filippo II (1527-1598) è figlio di Carlo V e Isabella del Portogallo. Successe al padre che abdicò in suo favore nel 1555 nei Paesi Bassi spagnoli e, nel 1556, per la Spagna e l'America. Successivamente sposò Maria del Portogallo (1527-1545), poi sua cugina Maria Tudor (1516-1558), regina d'Inghilterra, nel 1560 Elisabetta di Francia (1545-1568) e infine Anna d'Austria (1549-1580). Combatte contro la Francia di Enrico II, poi di Enrico IV. Sostiene la Controriforma. Vinse la vittoria di Lepanto nel 1571, morì nel 1598 e gli succedette il figlio Filippo.
