Monete di tipo e nome d'Alessandro III
Alessandro III il Grande è il figlio di Filippo II di Macedonia e Olimpia. Nacque nel 356 a.C., quando i cavalli di Filippo trionfavano ai Giochi Olimpici. Alla morte del padre, assassinato nel 336 aC, divenne re di Macedonia all'età di vent'anni. Immediatamente schiaccia i Tebani e rade al suolo la città che si era ribellata. Nel 334 aC si recò in Asia e, dopo la vittoria di Granico, partì alla conquista dell'impero achemenide, che lo avrebbe portato a Persepoli, quindi alle porte dell'India. Tornato a Babilonia, nel 325, sposò Roxane che gli diede un figlio. Due anni dopo morì senza aver completato la sua opera, all'età di trentatré anni..
