Sibari, colonia achea, fu fondata intorno al 720 aC Il lusso dei sibariti era proverbiale. Era la città più potente della Magna Grecia. Fu distrutta dai Crotoniati nel 510 a.C.. I superstiti trovarono rifugio a Poseidonia o Laus che fondarono.
