Coin published in the Numismatic Bulletin. This coin, coming from Lanz and recently entrusted by a depositor, is reported as not being found in the various editions of Frédéric Droulers' Repertoire. This author gives a strike figure of 10. 405 examples. If this figure is consistent with that which we found from our analyses carried out at the National Archives (AN, Z1b 828), it deserves some comments.. The copy struck in 1699 presents three differences: a fallen and uprooted tree under the bust, different from the director Claude François Arbilleur; a wheel with the year, different from the commissioned engraver Charles Louis Durand and a bird after the year, different from the engraver Bon Anathole Nicole. Since the opening of the workshop, the office of engraver at the Besançon Mint had not been filled and Durand had been appointed to fill this position.. The office was purchased by Nicole and letters of engraver's commission were issued to him on February 19, 1699 (AN, V1 137). Settled in Besançon, he had his different coin placed on the squares, adding to that of Durand. The first issue of coins struck with Nicole's squares, dated April 18, 1699, specified: \\\"and at the moment Mr. Nicolle, engraver, has requested us to mention in our present report that he took for his dispute (a small bird) which is placed in the legend on the reverse of the shield.\\\". Due to a change of engraver, out of the 10. 405 crowns struck in 1699 in Besançon, it is appropriate to distinguish the 3. 037 struck under the different tree/wheel of Arbilleur and Durand and delivered on January 23 and February 19, 1699 of the 7. 368 examples, with tree/wheel/small bird made under the engraver Nicole and issued between April 18 and November 21, 1699. It remains to find the shield on a new flan struck in January and February 1699 without the little bird of the engraver Nicole
