Les trois alérions portés au revers trouvent une justification ancienne.
A la fin du Moyen-Age, on feignait de croire que les ducs de Lorraine descendaient d'un frère de Godefroy de Bouillon, Guillaume. Une légende voulait que Godefroy, après avoir conquis Jérusalem, vit trois alérions et les perça tous les trois d'un seul trait de son arc.
The three alerions worn on the lapel have an ancient justification. At the end of the Middle Ages, it was believed that the Dukes of Lorraine were descended from a brother of Godfrey of Bouillon, William. Legend has it that Godfrey, after conquering Jerusalem, saw three alerions and pierced all three with a single shot from his bow.

LORRAINE - DUCHÉ DE LORRAINE - CHARLES III LE GRAND DUC
(1545-1608)
Carlo III (1543-1608) è figlio di Francesco Ier (1544-1545) e Cristina di Danimarca, nipote di Carlo V. Nacque a Nancy il 18 febbraio 1543 e vi morì il 14 maggio 1608. Succeduto al padre il 12 giugno 1545 sotto la reggenza della madre, fu dichiarato maggiorenne nel 1555 e sposò Claude de France, figlia di Enrico II, nel 1560. Ha cercato di mantenere una stretta neutralità tra la Francia e l'Impero. Profondamente cattolico, combatté ferocemente contro il protestantesimo. Con l'adesione di Francesco II e Maria Stuart, Guisa da parte della madre, Carlo gode di un grande credito alla corte di Francia che viene mantenuto sotto Carlo IX. Fondò l'Accademia di Pont-à-Mousson e decise che l'anno sarebbe iniziato il 1° gennaio del 1580. Abbellì Nancy. Dal 1584 si unì alla Lega Santa per rovesciare suo cognato Enrico III aiutando e finanziando suo cugino il duca di Guisa. Dopo la morte di Guisa, poi Enrico III, sostenne il duca di Mayenne e firmò la pace con Enrico IV nel 1595. Enrico, figlio di Carlo, sposò Caterina di Borbone, sorella di Enrico IV, nel 1598. Carlo morì nel 1608 in un tranquilla Lorena.
