Cette médaille de Giuseppe Cerbara et Giuseppe Girometti commémore l’incendie de 1823.
La basilique Saint-Paul-hors-les-Murs est une des quatre basiliques majeures de Rome, les trois autres étant les basiliques Saint-Jean-de-Latran, Sainte-Marie-Majeure et Saint-Pierre.
Sous le pontificat de Pie VII, dans la nuit du 15 au 16 juillet 1823, un incendie détruisit la majeure partie de l'édifice, mais l'abside, le transept et le cloître ne furent pas endommagés. Léon XII s'occupa de la reconstruction de l'édifice qui débuta en 1825. Il fut choisi de garder le plan paléochrétien et de construire un nouveau bâtiment..
This medal by Giuseppe Cerbara and Giuseppe Girometti commemorates the fire of 1823. The Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls is one of the four major basilicas of Rome, the other three being the basilicas of Saint John Lateran, Saint Mary Major, and Saint Peter. During the pontificate of Pius VII, on the night of July 15-16, 1823, a fire destroyed most of the building, but the apse, transept, and cloister were not damaged. Leo XII oversaw the reconstruction of the building, which began in 1825. It was decided to keep the early Christian plan and build a new building.

(1792-1878)
Pio IX (1792-1878), eletto dopo una vacanza di soli quindici giorni, ebbe il pontificato più lungo dell'Ottocento. Dopo un inizio felice, che lo aveva mostrato, se non liberale, almeno innovatore, tra il 1846 e il 1848, la rivoluzione romana lo riportò al conservatorismo. Dopo la Rivoluzione di febbraio in Francia, i disordini si diffusero in tutta Europa e persino a Roma. Di fronte al rifiuto di Pio IX di dichiarare guerra all'Austria, il 9 febbraio fu proclamata la repubblica su impulso di Mazzini e Garibaldi. Il 1 giugno un corpo di spedizione fu inviato a Roma per ristabilire l'ordine. I francesi presero la città il 3 luglio e restaurarono Pio IX. Non poté impedire a Vittorio Emanuele II di realizzare l'unità d'Italia e si trovò isolato dal 1861. Roma resistette per altri nove anni prima di cadere nelle mani del Re d'Italia e divenire capitale nel 1870. Pio IX vide gli ultimi nove anni della sua vita considerandosi prigioniero del potere italiano.
