Comme de nombreuses monnaies papales portant l’effigie du pape, cette monnaie a été montée. C’était souvent le cas des pèlerins qui souhaitaient à leur retour de Rome ramener une image du pape en souvenir.

ITALIA - STATO PONTIFICIO - INNOCENZO XI (Benedetto Odescalchi)

Benedetto Odescalchi nacque a Como nel 1611. Fu eletto e consacrato papa a Roma con il nome di Innocenzo XI. In numerose occasioni si oppose a Luigi XIV, che finì per impossessarsi del conte Venaissin. Il suo pontificato fu piuttosto austero e diede diverse leggi contro il lusso delle dame romane. Morì a Roma il 12 agosto 1689.
