Commento
Poids léger. Le bouclier est orné d’un cavalier galopant à droite. Notre exemplaire appartient à la série la plus lourde des folles frappée entre l’an 12 et l’an 15 (538/539 et 541/542). Ce type avec la tête gonflée de Justinien Ier fait peut-être référence à la peste que l’empereur attrapa en 542. H. Pottier a relevé des folles avec ce type de visage pour les années 15 et 16 (541/542 et 542/543). Nous sommes ici en présence d’un follis de l’an 14 (540-541) qui présente les mêmes caractérisitques au niveau du portrait. Cette variété semble beaucoup plus rare que les folles avec la tête normale.

This type with the swollen head of Justinian I perhaps refers to the plague that the emperor caught in 542. H. Pottier noted crazy women with this type of face for the years 15 and 16 (541/542 and 542/ 543). Giustiniano successe a suo zio Giustino nel 527 dopo una co-reggenza dal 4 aprile al 1 agosto 527. Regnò con l'imperatrice Teodora. La costruzione di Hagia Sophia fu completata sotto il suo regno, che segna l'apice delle conquiste bizantine. Cartagine così come l'Africa e parte della Numidia furono riconquistate dai Vandali grazie al generale Bélisaire. Dopo un secolo di dominazione vandalica, il romanismo tornò a regnare sul Mediterraneo. Belisario quindi attaccò gli Ostrogoti e prese Roma il 9 dicembre 536. Teodora morì nel 545. Giustiniano regnò altri vent'anni. Senza figli, gli succedette il nipote Giustino II..
