La monnaie du Japon commémore le programme de train à grande vitesse japonais appelé Shinkansen. Initié en 1959, la première ligne entre Tokyo et Osaka est inaugurée en 1964 à l’occasion des Jeux Olympiques de Tokyo. Depuis de nouvelles lignes ont été construites et l’expansion du réseau se poursuit.La ligne Shinkansen Hokkaido est une ligne à grande vitesse mise en service à partir de 2016 qui reliera à terme Sapporo dans l'île de Honshū à Aomori dans l'île de Hokkaidō via le tunnel sous-marin du Seikan.
