Cette médaille est assez importante par sa destination. C’était la marque distinctive qui devait être portée par les membres de l’Assemblée Nationale Législative, d’après le décret rendu par l’Assemblée le 12 juillet 1792 et sanctionné par le roi le 22 du même mois : “L’assemblée Nationale décrète que les membres du Corps Législatif porteront dans le lieu de leurs séances, et quand ils feront partie d’une députation, ou rempliront une commission, un ruban aux trois couleurs en trois bandes ondées. Ce ruban sera placé en sautoir ; les tables de la loi seront attachées à son extrémité inférieure : le livre sera de métal doré et ouvert. On lira sur le folio verso les mots : Droits de l’homme et sur le folio recto, le mot : Constitution”.
