Commemorative Masonic medal created on October 18 by the R:. L:. Balduin zur Linde, at the Or:. of Leipzig (1), to honor all German Masons who contributed to the growth of German Masonry since the French defeat at the Battle of Leipzig (October 16-19, 1813), called the \\\"Battle of the Nations,\\\" against Emperor Napoleon I, in which Prussia participated. This was the largest confrontation of the Napoleonic Wars. It was during this period that the Iron Cross (2) distinction was created, illustrated on the obverse of the medal, symbolizing German patriotism. Leipzig is a city located in the northwest of the state of Saxony. The origins of the city date back to around 900 and the establishment of a Slavic colony on the banks of the Parthian River. The name Leipzig comes from the Sorbian (a language belonging to the Northwest Slavic group of the Indo-European language family) place name Lipsk, which means \\\"the place near the linden trees.\\\" For the Slavic peoples who are credited with founding the city, the linden tree was a sacred tree.
