Sotto la presidenza di McKinley (1897-1901), gli Stati Uniti affrontarono la Spagna e le presero Cuba, Guam, Porto Rico e le Filippine. Theodore Roosevelt succedette al presidente assassinato (1901/1909) e intraprese una politica interventista in America e si atteggiò a mediatore nei conflitti regionali. A Taft successe nel 1913 Wilson che avrebbe portato gli Stati Uniti in guerra nel 1917.
