Commento

Il semblerait qu’Auguste Saint Gaudens se soit représenté sous les traits de l’homme portant un chapeau, qui accompagne Christophe Colomb ; ce serait alors l’unique autoportrait connu de ce sculpteur, qui est l’un des plus grands d’Amérique.
Le projet du revers d’Auguste Saint Gaudens, présentant un homme nu, ayant été rejeté par le Département du Trésor, la gravure en fut alors confiée au graveur en chef de la monnaie de Philadelphie, Charles E. Barber..
It appears that Auguste Saint Gaudens depicted himself as the man wearing a hat, accompanying Christopher Columbus; this would be the only known self-portrait of this sculptor, who is one of the greatest in America. The design for the reverse of Auguste Saint Gaudens, depicting a naked man, having been rejected by the Treasury Department, the engraving was then entrusted to the chief engraver of the Philadelphia Mint, Charles E. Barber.
