CIPPRUS - REGNO DI CIPPRUS - SALAMINA - EVAGORAS I
(411 - 374 a.C.)
Re di Salamina nel 411 a.C., Evagora fu fedele alleato degli Ateniesi. Partecipò alla battaglia di Cnido nel 394 a.C. e conquistò quasi tutta l'isola di Cipro. Dovette combattere contro gli altri dinasti dell'isola, Amathonte, Citium e Soloi. Il re Artaserse II inviò Ecatomnos, satrapo di Caria per combattere il monarca ribelle. Evagora conquistò Tiro e alcune città sulla costa fenicia. Con l'aiuto degli Ateniesi e di Chabrias, conquistò l'intera isola di Cipro, ad eccezione di Citium. Dopo la pace del Gran Re (Antalcida) nel 387 aC, si trovò solo contro la minaccia persiana. Il re dei Persiani ordinò al satrapo Tiribaze di riportare l'isola nell'Impero. Alla fine Evagora fu sconfitto e Salamina assediata. Ha dovuto sottomettersi per mantenere il suo trono, ma ha perso la maggior parte dei suoi guadagni territoriali. Fu assassinato insieme al figlio maggiore Pnitagora. fu Nicocle, il suo secondo figlio che gli succedette.
