L'automobile è una grande invenzione tecnologica che ha cambiato notevolmente le società di molti paesi nel corso del XX secolo. Nasce nell'Ottocento durante la Rivoluzione Industriale, quando la tecnologia dà il posto d'onore al motore a vapore come fonte di energia, per poi virare massicciamente verso il petrolio e il motore a combustione interna, con il concorrente a lungo trascurato il motore elettrico.
