Tegea, popolata nel periodo miceneo è citata nell'Iliade. Tegea entrò nella prima confederazione arcadica. La città combatté al fianco di Sparta durante la guerra del Peloponneso. Tegea si unì all'alleanza tebana dopo la battaglia di Leuttra e si unì alla nuova confederazione arcadica fino alla battaglia di Mantinea nel 362 a.C..
