Commento

Prospero Lambertini, né à Bologne le 31 mars 1675, est le fils de Marcello Lambertini et de Lucrezia Bulgarini. Il est élu pape en 1740 sous le nom de Benoît XIV (en latin Benedictus XIV, en italien Benedetto XIV). Il meurt le 3 mai 1758.

La signature du revers permet d’attribuer cette médaille au graveur Ottone Hamerani, médailliste et graveur né à Rome en 1694 et mort en 1768. Cadet de Giovanni Hamerani, il s’occupa de l’office des médailles des papes Clément XII, Benoît XIV et Clément XIII. Il géra l’office de la Monnaie de Rome de 1764 à 1768. Dans l’ouvrage de Forrer L., p.406 du volume II, il est fait mention de cette médaille.

La scène correspond à l’ouverture de la Porte Sainte en 1748 inaugurée par le Pape Benoît XIV. Elle fut la dernière porte de bois avant d’être remplacée, en 1949, par une porte de bronze richement décorée. Une Porte Sainte est une porte ouverte par le pape pour marquer symboliquement le commencement de l'Année sainte.
Prospero Lambertini, born in Bologna on March 31, 1675, was the son of Marcello Lambertini and Lucrezia Bulgarini. He was elected Pope in 1740 under the name of Benedict XIV (in Latin Benedictus XIV, in Italian Benedetto XIV). He died on May 3, 1758. The signature on the reverse allows this medal to be attributed to the engraver Ottone Hamerani, medallist and engraver born in Rome in 1694 and died in 1768. A younger son of Giovanni Hamerani, he took care of the medal office of Popes Clement XII, Benedict XIV and Clement XIII. He managed the office of the Mint of Rome from 1764 to 1768. In the work of Forrer L., p.406 of volume II, mention is made of this medal. The scene corresponds to the opening of the Holy Door in 1748, inaugurated by Pope Benedict XIV. It was the last wooden door before being replaced, in 1949, by a richly decorated bronze door. A Holy Door is a door opened by the Pope to symbolically mark the beginning of the Holy Year.
