Né à Rouen en 1775, Boïeldieu, professeur de piano au conservatoire, fait ses armes pendant la Terreur, acquiert la célébrité durant le Consulat et l'Empire, est honoré par les Bourbons (il est compositeur de Louis XVIII, membre de l'Institut) puis ruiné par la Révolution de Juillet. Il écrit de nombreux opéras comiques dont la Dame Blanche (1825) faisant de lui le principal compositeur français d'opéras du premier quart du XIXe siècle. Il meurt en 1834. Un quartier de La Défense porte aujourd’hui son nom.
