Rubans de type 1. Il revient à l’école anglaise et aux travaux de P. V. Hill, The dating and arrangement of the Undated Coins of Rome AD. 98-148, Londres 1970, d’avoir reclassé les différentes émissions de l’atelier de Rome, grâce à la théorie des cycles et d’avoir mis en lumière l’organisation de l’atelier de Rome qui travaille en officines et non pas en fonction du métal comme l’avaient décrit les numismates du XIXe siècle.

Traiano nacque il 18 settembre 53 a Italica, vicino a Siviglia in Spagna, come il suo allievo Adriano. Appartiene a una famiglia di coloni stabilitisi in Spagna. Dopo una brillante carriera militare sotto i Flavi, fu console nel 91 e legato di Germania Superiore quando fu adottato da Nerva nel 97 per succedergli. Dopo la morte di quest'ultimo, diventa augusto. Il suo regno sarà dedicato a numerose campagne militari contro i Germani sul limes renano, che gli valsero il titolo di Germanico. Quindi, condusse due guerre daciche contro Decebalo che si conclusero con l'annessione della Dacia. Traiano prepara una campagna contro i Parti, i turbolenti e potenti vicini dell'est. Lasciò Roma per l'Oriente e stabilì il suo quartier generale ad Antiochia prima di invadere il regno dei Parti. Arriverà fino a Ctesifonte (Seleucia sul Tigri). Quando morì l'8 agosto 117, l'Impero era al suo apice e conobbe la sua massima espansione territoriale..
