Dès le XVIIe siècle, les portugais s’établissent dans l’île mais abondonnent la partie Ouest à la La VOC (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie ou "Compagnie hollandaise des Indes orientales") qui occupe Kupang en 1653. Le 20 avril 1859, la cission est définitive. Le Portugal occupera la partie orientale jusqu’à la Révolution de Oeillets. Le 28 novembre 1975, l’indépendance est déclarée. Neuf jours plus tard, l’armée indonésienne envahit le Timor Oriental qui est annexé à l’Indonésie.
