Ce jeton a été mis en circulation en 1993 sous le présidence de Boris Eltsine . Malgré des velléités d’indépendance la République du Tatarstan reste un sujet de la Fédération de Russie.

Dal 1920 il Tatarstan è una repubblica autonoma all'interno dell'URSS e poi della Federazione Russa. Al momento della disgregazione dell'URSS, il Soviet Supremo della repubblica considerò l'adesione come membro fondatore della CSI, ma alla fine rimase all'interno della Federazione Russa. In seguito agli accordi del 1994, il Tatarstan beneficia di una maggiore autonomia ma i suoi poteri sono stati da allora ridotti in seguito alla politica di armonizzazione voluta negli anni 2000 da Vladimir Putin.
