Monetazione civica autonoma
Antiochia fu fondata nel 300 a.C. da Seleuco I. Fu la capitale del regno seleucide prima di diventare quella della provincia romana della Siria. La Siria fu annessa da Pompeo nel 64 aC Sotto l'Impero, Antiochia era una delle città più popolate dell'Impero con 200.000-300.000 abitanti. Importante metropoli dell'Oriente romano, fu anche città minacciata dalle invasioni. I Parti poi i Sassanidi minacciarono o conquistarono la città. Fu molto presto cristianizzata come Alessandria. La città, cosmopolita, era il punto di arrivo di tutte le carovane provenienti dall'Oriente.
