Les cantons de Berne et de Vaud décidèrent de contremarquer ces écus et de leur donner une contre-valeur en batzen. À Berne les écus furent estampés à 40 Batzen ou 4 Frank, correspondant à l'écu de la République Helvétique ou des cantons.
Before and during the Revolution, Switzerland had been flooded with 6-pound ecus, which circulated freely in most cantons. The cantons of Bern and Vaud decided to countermark these ecus and give them an equivalent value in batzen. In Bern, the ecus were stamped at 40 Batzen or 4 Frank, corresponding to the ecus of the Helvetic Republic or the cantons.
