The origin of the bridge is associated with a legend. The locals wanted to build a new stone bridge. A stranger offered to do the work but demanded in exchange the life of the first soul to cross the bridge. The locals agreed, and the bridge was built in three days, but no one used it: people had realized they had dealt with the devil. Someone then sent a goat to cross the bridge. The devil, furious, wanted to throw a rock to destroy the bridge and punish the people of Uri, but he missed his target. A variation of the story says that a pious woman traced a cross on the stone, which discouraged the devil, who fled, dropping the block. The rock rolled throughout the gorges and stopped below Göschenen, where the \\\"Devil's Stone\\\" can still be seen.
