Singapore is located on an island in the far south of the Malay Peninsula, from which it is separated to the north by the Strait of Johor, and borders the Singapore Strait to the south. It is known and often held up as an example for its extraordinary economic success. After independence in 1965, Singapore, with very few natural resources and significant socio-economic problems – race riots, massive unemployment, housing and water shortages – managed to become one of the most developed and prosperous countries in the world, in terms of economy, education, health, security, and urban planning. The city, a sovereign city, is a Chinese redoubt at the very heart of the Malay world: the population is predominantly Chinese (74.3%). This ethnic confrontation partly gave rise to the unrest that accelerated its withdrawal from Malaysia on August 9, 1965.
