Robert II of France, nicknamed Robert the Pious, was born in Orléans around 972 and died at the Château de Melun on July 20, 1031.. Son of Hugh Capet and his wife Adelaide of Aquitaine, he was the second Frankish king of the Capetian dynasty.. He reigned from 996 to 1031 and is thus one of the sovereigns of the year 1000.
Associated with royalty from 987, he assisted his father on military matters (with the siege of Laon twice, in 988 and 991). His solid education, provided by Gerbert d'Aurillac in Reims, allowed him to deal with religious questions, for which he quickly became the guarantor (he led the Council of Verzy in 991 and that of Chelles in 994).. Continuing his father's political work, after 996 he managed to maintain the alliance with Normandy and Anjou and to contain the ambitions of Eudes II of Blois.
At the cost of a long struggle that began in April 1003, he conquered the Duchy of Burgundy, which should have come to him as an inheritance upon the death, without direct descendants, of his uncle Henry I of Burgundy, but which the latter had passed on to his son-in-law Otto-William..
