Ce dauphin est un témoignage à la frontière entre Numismatique et Archéologie. Considéré comme pré-monétaire, ce type d’objet a pu être utilisé par des populations celtes au contact du monde grec à un moment où la monnaie ne s’est pas encore imposée.

Olbia come Istros (Istrus) era una colonia milesia, situata non lontano da Borysthenes e Hypanis sul Pontus Euxin, equidistante da Tyra e Panticapaeum sul Chersoneso di Tracia. La sua prosperità derivava dalla sua posizione geografica strategica tra le tribù scitiche e Pont-Euxin. Conobbe la sua massima espansione economica nel periodo ellenistico. Fu finalmente presa dai barbari nel III secolo d.C.
