Médaille signée au droit KIRK FEC, pour KIRK John, sculpteur et médailleur anglais (1724-1776).

John Wilkes (17 octobre 1725 – 26 décembre 1797), homme politique et journaliste britannique. Député au Parlement de Westminster, Lord-Maire de Londres, son nom reste attaché aux scandales et aux émeutes que provoquèrent ses articles et ses combats pour la liberté de la presse, l'inviolabilité parlementaire et le droit des classes moyennes à élire leurs représentants.
Il fut à l'origine d'une célèbre affaire sous le règne de George III connue en France sous le nom d'affaire Wilkes, ou pour la distinguer de la "seconde affaire Wilkes", affaire des Imprimeurs ou affaire du North Briton. Elle s'inscrit dans un contexte de mécontentement populaire à Londres aux lendemains de la Guerre de Sept Ans. Elle révéla les intentions du roi George III d'affirmer son pouvoir, après la relative faiblesse de ses deux prédécesseurs..
Medal signed on the obverse KIRK FEC, for KIRK John, English sculptor and medalist (1724-1776). John Wilkes (October 17, 1725 – December 26, 1797), British politician and journalist. Member of Parliament at Westminster, Lord Mayor of London, his name remains attached to the scandals and riots provoked by his articles and his fights for freedom of the press, parliamentary inviolability, and the right of the middle classes to elect their representatives. He was at the origin of a famous affair during the reign of George III known in France as the Wilkes affair, or to distinguish it from the \\\"second Wilkes affair\\\", the Printers' affair or the North Briton affair. It took place in a context of popular discontent in London in the aftermath of the Seven Years' War. It revealed King George III's intentions to assert his power, after the relative weakness of his two predecessors.
