Questo periodo è principalmente segnato dall'inizio della Seconda Guerra Punica nel 218 dC dopo la presa di Sagunto e dal rifiuto di Cartagine di consegnare Annibale ai Romani. Quest'ultimo ha attraversato i Pirenei e le Alpi con quasi cinquantamila uomini. Le armate romane furono sconfitte a Trebia nel 218 dC, al Lago Trasimeno nel 217 dC ea Cannes nel 216 dC Nel 212 dC Annibale prese Taranto e radunò le città dell'Italia meridionale. 211 AC segna una vittoria romana a Capua..
