The medal was made after the work of Pierre Dauphin. Passionate about the island of Oléron, where he had been going since the early 1960s, this fishing enthusiast had taken the time to get to know the Oléron landscapes and in particular the island's lights. A native of Auvergne, he studied at the Rouen School of Fine Arts from 1947 to 1950 and was a drawing teacher there from 1954 to 1976, then director and teacher at the Alfortville School of Art (Val de Marne) from 1976 to 1989.
