Cette large médaille d’or fut remise par le CNRS (Centre Nationale de la Recherche Scientifique) au géographe et alpiniste Raoul Blanchard (1877-1965). Intéressé par la géographie grâce à l’enseignement de Paul Vidal de La Blache, il deviendra professeur de géographie et soutiendra une thèse de géographie régionale sur la Flandre. Professeur à l’Université de Grenoble, il fondera un centre d’étude sur les Alpes françaises, l’Institut de géographie alpine. Nommé professeur de géographie à l’Université d’Harvard, il s’intéressera au Canada et ira à de nombreuses reprises au Québec. Il y est considéré comme le père de la géographie moderne.

This large gold medal was awarded by the CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research) to the geographer and mountaineer Raoul Blanchard (1877-1965). Interested in geography thanks to the teachings of Paul Vidal de La Blache, he became a professor of geography and defended a thesis on regional geography on Flanders. A professor at the University of Grenoble, he founded a study center on the French Alps, the Institute of Alpine Geography. Appointed professor of geography at Harvard University, he became interested in Canada and traveled to Quebec on numerous occasions. There, he is considered the father of modern geography.
