La charge de lieutenant général de police fut créée en 1667. Ses attributions étaient énormes : observation, police des mœurs, règlements sanitaires, contrôle des écrits, des mendiants, etc. Le premier d’entre eux fut le fameux La Reynie de 1667 à 1697. Charles-Marie-Antoine Sartine (1729-1801) exerça cette charge de 1759 à août 1774 à la suite de Bertin. Il devient conseiller d’État en 1767. Paris lui doit la construction de la Halle aux blés et l’éclairage par réverbères. En 1774, il devient ministre de la Marine. Opposé à Necker, son ministère se termine en 1780. Il échappe à la révolution en se retirant en Espagne.
The position of lieutenant general of police was created in 1667. Its responsibilities were enormous: observation, morality policing, health regulations, control of writings, beggars, etc. The first of these was the famous La Reynie from 1667 to 1697.
