Commento
Georges Dillemann, dans son ouvrage Jetons et Médailles Pharmaceutiques (p.14), donne l'explication de ce revers : le palmier n'est pas l'emblème des apothicaires, comme le pensait Feuardent, ni leurs armes, suivant Réaubourg, mais le symbole des trois règnes de la Nature. Le palmier représente le règne végétal, le serpent, le règne animal et le sol rocailleux le règne minéral. Les métiers d'apothicaires et de pharmaciens furent séparés en avril 1777 et l'autorisation de battre jetons donnée en 1778. Notre exemplaire a été nettoyé très anciennement.

Dopo i musulmani, la farmacia medievale europea si arricchì della ricerca chimica. La dottrina comune riteneva che le malattie costituissero essenze morbose e che i rimedi fungessero da antidoto. Apparve anche nel XVI e XVII secolo. nuovi rimedi come arnica, valeriana, china. La corporazione degli speziali era unita a quella dei droghieri perché lo zucchero, raro nel Medioevo, era considerato più un rimedio che un alimento. Gli speziali iniziarono ad essere regolamentati da Carlo VIII nel 1484, poi Luigi XII separò gli speziali dai droghieri. L'accesso alla professione di farmacista era difficile, il che non impediva ai medici dell'epoca di Molière di considerare inferiori i farmacisti-speziali. La prima scuola pubblica di farmacia risale al 1576 e Luigi XVI la trasformò in Collegio di farmacia nel 1777. Poi, Bonaparte organizzò le prime tre scuole nazionali di farmacia a Parigi, Montpellier e Strasburgo.
