I "maestri delle richieste del re" divennero nel XVI secolo. "commissari defunti per l'esecuzione degli ordini del re" poi dal 1625 "intendenti di giustizia, polizia e finanze, commissari defunti per l'esecuzione degli ordini del re". Ispettori e amministratori, gli intendenti sovrintendevano agli ufficiali di giustizia, avevano il sopravvento sull'ordine pubblico, sulle truppe, sulla sussistenza. Hanno anche lavorato con il controllore generale delle finanze su questioni economiche e tasse. Ogni generalità aveva un intendente. Furono aboliti nel 1789.
