Georges-Louis Leclerc, comte de Buffon (1707-1788) est un naturaliste, mathématicien, biologiste, cosmologiste, philosophe et écrivain français.
À la fois académicien des sciences et académicien français, il participe à l'esprit des Lumières et collabore à l'Encyclopédie, notamment en se chargeant des sciences de la nature. Ses théories ont influencé deux générations de naturalistes, en particulier Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck et Charles Darwin. Salué par ses contemporains pour son maître ouvrage Histoire naturelle, Buffon a été qualifié de « Pline de Montbard ».
Son nom est lié à la localité de Buffon, en Côte-d'Or, dont la seigneurie fut acquise par la famille Leclerc..
Medal awarded to J. Lesage. Georges-Louis Leclerc, Count of Buffon (1707-1788) was a French naturalist, mathematician, biologist, cosmologist, philosopher, and writer. Both an Academician of Sciences and a French Academician, he participated in the spirit of the Enlightenment and contributed to the Encyclopedia, notably by taking charge of the natural sciences. His theories influenced two generations of naturalists, in particular Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck and Charles Darwin. Hailed by his contemporaries for his masterpiece Natural History, Buffon was called the \\\"Pline of Montbard.\\\" His name is linked to the town of Buffon, in Côte-d'Or, whose seigneury was acquired by the Leclerc family.
