Commento

Né à Agen, où il est réputé avoir fondé, d'après l'historiographie locale, le Buffet de la Gare, Evariste Carrance est d'abord un polygraphe, auteur d'une œuvre abondante, et promoteur de la littérature : il fonde et anime pendant 23 ans les Concours poétiques de Bordeaux, dont les contributions sont publiées à compte d'auteur sous le titre Littérature contemporaine.
C'est dans le deuxième tome (janvier 1869) que fut imprimé le Chant premier des Chants de Maldoror, qu'Isidore Ducasse avait envoyé anonymement, sans doute après avoir lu l'annonce du concours dans la Revue populaire en septembre 1868 (il avait reçu le second prix du concours). Il s'agit d'une version remaniée par rapport à l'édition à compte d'auteurs imprimée chez Ballitout à l'automne 1868.
A titre personnel, Evariste Carrance a laissé une centaine d'œuvres, parmi lesquelles des comédies (Vingt minutes d'arrêt... Buffet!), des poèmes (La Prostituée), des romans (Les mystères d'Agen), ainsi que des chansons maçonniques. Pour sa biographie, voir http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%89variste_Carrance . Born in Agen, where he is reputed to have founded, according to local historiography, the Buffet de la Gare, Evariste Carrance was first and foremost a polygraphist, author of an abundant body of work, and promoter of literature: he founded and ran the Bordeaux Poetic Competitions for 23 years, whose contributions were published at his own expense under the title Contemporary Literature. It was in the second volume (January 1869) that the first song of the Songs of Maldoror was printed, which Isidore Ducasse had sent anonymously, no doubt after reading the competition announcement in the Revue populaire in September 1868 (he had received second prize in the competition). This is a revised version of the self-published edition printed by Ballitout in the autumn of 1868. Evariste Carrance personally left around a hundred works, including comedies (Vingt minutes d'arrêt... Buffet!), poems (La Prostituée), novels (Les mystères d'Agen), as well as Masonic songs.
