Emmanuel Pinto succedette a Raymond Despuig (1736-1741) come Gran Maestro del Sovrano Ordine di Malta. L'Ordine degli Ospedalieri è stato fondato a Gerusalemme nel 1099. La sua sede è stata a Malta dal 1530 al 1798 ed è a Roma dal 1834..
