Ce jeton fut frappé pour commémorer la naissance du dauphin, le 11 novembre 1781, probablement sur demande de la ville de Strasbourg dont le lis de type florentin est repris au revers de cet exemplaire.

Louis-Joseph è il primo figlio di Luigi XVI e Maria Antonietta. Nacque il 21 ottobre 1781 a Versailles ma morì quando non aveva ancora otto anni. Suo fratello, meglio conosciuto come Luigi XVII, prese allora il titolo di Delfino.
