Exemplaire issu du médaillier Franklin qui met à l’honneur Un dimanche après-midi à l’île de la Grande Jatte : Ce tableau a été peint entre mai 1884 - mars 1885 et octobre 1885 - mai 1886 sur l'île de la Grande Jatte appelée aujourd'hui île de la Jatte, située sur la Seine, entre Neuilly-sur-Seine et Levallois-Perret sur sa rive droite, Courbevoie et le quartier d'affaires de La Défense sur sa rive gauche. Elle a été rendue célèbre par les peintres impressionnistes qu'elle a inspirés, en particulier Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh et Alfred Sisley et bien sûr Georges Seurat.
Ce tableau de grand format se caractérise par des tons froids et une technique de division de la touche, appelée couramment pointilliste. Georges Seurat établit des différences de plans en distribuant deux grandes zones d'ombre et de lumière, mais il garde la même intensité chromatique sur l'ensemble de l'espace. On remarque qu’il a également peint l'encadrement de son tableau, avec sa technique divisionniste.
Ce tableau a été exposé à la huitième exposition des impressionnistes en 1886.
