Exemplaire issu du médaillier Franklin qui met à l’honneur un tableau de Paul Gauguin; D’où venons-nous ? Que sommes-nous ? Où allons-nous ? : Le tableau se lit de droite à gauche, et se divise en trois groupes principaux de personnes illustrant les questions posées dans le titre. Les trois femmes avec un enfant représentent le début de la vie, le groupe du milieu symbolise l'existence quotidienne des jeunes adultes, et dans le dernier groupe, d'après l'artiste, « une vieille femme approchant la mort apparaît réconciliée et résignée à cette idée » ; à ses pieds, « un étrange oiseau blanc tenant en sa patte un lézard, représente la futilité des mots. » L'idole bleue à l'arrière-plan représente apparemment ce que Gauguin décrivait comme « L'au-delà ».

Ce tableau est conservé au Musée des Beaux-Arts de Boston aux États-Unis.
