Cette médaille représentant la fameuse Didon serait l’oeuvre de Alessandro CESATI (1538-1564). Le dernier exemplaire passé en vente a réalisé 1500€ en mars 2017 chez H. D. Rauch. En 2012, Nomos a vendu une médaille comparable à 4000 CHF.
Ce revers est aussi associé à un avers avec un buste masculin et la légende ΠPIAMOΣ BAΣIΛEVΣ (vendu 1500€ en 2013 par Bertolami Fine Arts).

Didon, Elyssa, Elissa, Elisha, Elysha ou Hélissa, est une princesse phénicienne, fondatrice légendaire et première reine de Carthage. Arrivée sur les côtes d'Afrique du Nord, dans l'actuelle Tunisie, elle fonde la cité de Carthage. Selon la légende, elle se serait immolée par le feu pour ne pas avoir à épouser le souverain des lieux, Hiarbas.
Dans la mythologie grecque et romaine, Didon est la fille de Bélos et la sœur du roi de Tyr, Pygmalion.
Le mythe de Didon a été repris par Virgile dans son oeuvre, l’Énéide. Il a également fait l'objet de nombreuses utilisations dans les autres arts : en musique, en peinture, en sculpture, etc..
