Benedetto XIII (1649-1730) successe a Innocenzo XIII. Mantenne le sue abitudini monastiche di monaco benedettino, rompendo con la decadenza dei suoi predecessori. Tuttavia il governo dei suoi stati è lasciato all'amico Niccolò Coscia che commette numerose appropriazioni indebite finanziarie e rovina l'erario pontificio..
