Maximilien III Joseph a succédé à son père, Charles, en 1745. Charles, qui avait essayé de s'emparer de la couronne impériale, avait vu Munich occupée et la Bavière ne fut d'ailleurs rendue à Maximilien III qu'après qu'il ait reconnu les prétentions de François de Lorraine et de Marie-Thérèse à l'Empire. Il passa son règne à essayer de restaurer son duché. Sans héritier, le duché de Bavière passa dans la maison de Sulzbach avec Charles-Théodore (1777-1799).
Maximilian III Joseph succeeded his father, Charles, in 1745. Charles, who had tried to seize the imperial crown, had seen Munich occupied and Bavaria was only returned to Maximilian III after he recognized the claims of François de Lorraine and Marie-Thérèse to the Empire.
