Warren G. Harding (1865-1923) est le 29e président des États-Unis d’Amérique. Sénateur de l’Ohio, Harding est un quasi-inconnu quand il est poussé par ses amis magnats du pétrole à concourir à l’investiture pour le Parti Républicain. Il prône une politique de retour à la “normale”, prônant l’isolationnisme, le désengagement militaire et diplomatique en Europe et une moindre intervention du pouvoir fédéral en rupture avec les politiques de ses prédécesseurs. Il est facilement élu. Peu investi dans sa fonction, son mandat est très largement marqué par la politique du “laissez-faire et la corruption qui touche même son ministre de l’intérieur. En 1923, après une visite en Alaska, il développe une pneumonie et meure à San Francisco le 2 août 1923. Son vice-président, Calvin Coolidge lui succède.

A senator from Ohio, Harding was virtually unknown when he was pushed by his oil magnate friends to run for the Republican Party nomination. He advocated a policy of returning to “normalcy,” advocating isolationism, military and diplomatic disengagement in Europe, and less federal intervention, a departure from the policies of his predecessors. He was easily elected. Little invested in his role, his mandate was largely marked by the policy of laissez-faire and corruption that even affected his Minister of the Interior. In 1923, after a visit to Alaska, he developed pneumonia and died in San Francisco on August 2, 1923. His Vice President, Calvin Coolidge, succeeded him.
